To start, here is a video of me exposing some of what I call the "abstract musical development process". During the process I take some ideas I have started within the last day or two. I try to provide just a small bit of structure as I go, while poking around in different directions to see what happens. As this particular instance is not focused (it's abstract) on a particular piece of music, the result is something that doesn't necessarily go anywhere (it doesn't have to), which may or may not contribute to a more focused musical project.

I'll aim at getting some videos of Prince of Whales material on here soon.

  1. I am assuming that Prince of Whales is you. How often do you let yourself experience the abstract musical development process? Could you possibly put that experience into words and write about your creative process? It would be hard but maybe rewarding for you to think about what enables you to express yourself.

  2. thanks for setting up the blog and making a first post. it's hard at this point to know what you're thinking about for the thesis. what are you hoping to accomplish? how will you get it done? what's the next step?

  3. You were the one who was trying to get a concert and an album out, right? I like this continual progress sort of video logging. Documenting the experience. Are your bandmates involved? Do you have a sort of theory on the music you make, or why that you could write out? Maybe even an end goal for the band. Are all of your visions the same? I don't know, documentary stuff.

  4. Or is your project so performance based that you'd want your end goal to be not the journey, but the result? So, how big is the concert you want to have, or how will you get your album to as many people as possible? Are those things you can document or plan about?

  5. Have you revised your ideas about what you wanted to do since the beginning of the semester when you presented in class? It would be nice if we could maybe see the connection between what you are working on and what you ultimately want to accomplish.
